Troublesome green algae serve as coating substrate in record-setting battery

Unwanted blooms of Cladophora algae throughout the Baltic and in other parts of the world are not entirely without a positive side. A group of researchers at the Ångström Laboratory at Uppsala University have discovered that the distinctive cellulose nanostructure of these algae can serve as an effective coating substrate for use in environmentally friendly batteries. The findings have been published in an article in Nano Letters.

Glycomar receives funding to bring products to nutrition and cosmetics market

An Argyll biotechnology company has been awarded funding from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) to help launch a number of its products for the commercial market.

Glycomar Ltd, based at Dunstaffnage near Oban, is looking to bring products to market in the fields of both nutrition and cosmetics.

The business has been awarded up to £55,850 towards setting up an 18 month development programme that will build on the success of its research and development of the last three years. The potential products use anti-inflammatory agents to improve joint health and intestinal health and in skin care to promote anti-aging. The development programme will complete the R&D process and bring two new products to market.

Norway establishes new strategy for marine bioprospecting

Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs Helga Pedersen and State Secretary in the Ministry of Trade and Industry Rikke Lind recently presented the government’s national strategy for marine bioprospecting.

“Marine bioprospecting is a strategic focus area in which Norway has positive potential for asserting itself in international competition. The government’s aim is to unlock the great potential for wealth creation which lies within marine bioprospecting,” said State Secretary Rikke Lind of the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

Powerful fish-killing toxin could have cancer-killing properties

A powerful fish-killing toxin could have cancer-killing properties as well, according to collaborative research led by Agricultural Research Service(ARS) microbiologist Paul V. Zimba and chemist Peter Moeller of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The toxin, called euglenophycin, has a molecular structure similar to that of solenopsin, an alkaloid from fire ant venom known to inhibit tumor development.

The findings were published online in July in the journal Toxicon.

Solid start in USA for Superba Krill

The biotechnology company Aker BioMarine shipped 15 metric tons (MT) of Superba Krill to the US market in the second quarter of 2009. Of this tonnage, 4.8 MT were sales recorded in the second quarter.

”The shipment is a key milestone. An additional 16 MT will be ready for delivery this August,” says Hallvard Muri, Aker BioMarine President and CEO.

”Aker BioMarine is stepping up international marketing and sales efforts, which include a pilot launch of direct sales to consumers in the United States. The pilot launch will indicate the commercial potential for Superba™ and our direct sales model in the US market. We are also seeking a cooperative agreement with a partner holding a strong position in the US market,” says Mr. Muri.
