AlgaeTek Begins Development of Algae Facility in Texas

Neptune Technologies & Bioressources Obtains New Patent Directed to Compositions of Omega-3 Fatty Acid Phospholipids Including Krill Oil

Neptune Technologies and Bioressources Inc., announces that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) has granted Neptune a new patent covering omega-3 phospholipids comprising polyunsaturated fatty acids, one of the main bioactive ingredients in all recognized Krill Oils. The patent is granted for the U.S. market and is valid until 2025.

Neptune’s recently issued U.S. patent (U.S. No. 8,030,348) covers, regardless of the extraction process, novel omega-3 fatty acid phospholipid compositions suitable for human consumption, synthetic and/or natural, including compositions extracted from marine and aquatic biomasses. The 8,030,348 patent protects Neptune Krill Oil (NKO(R)) and also covers amongst others, oils and powders extracted from krill, containing marine phospholipids bonded to EPA and/or DHA, distributed and/or sold in the U.S. market.

Global omega-3 market set for ongoing 15-20% growth: Report

The 2010 global omega-3 market – just for foods and beverages and food supplements – is worth €5.57bn, according to a new report, with growth predicted of between 15-20%.

The omega-3 sector continues to expand, according to Packaged facts data.

Packaged Facts said the food, beverages and supplements figure, which excludes fish, represented a 17% rise on 2009.

This sector continues to show strong growth, although annual growth rates are naturally moderating downward from the explosive gains seen in 2004 and 2005,” Packaged Facts observed.

In 2003, global sales of such products sat at €685m which jumped to €1.4bn in 2004 and then €2.4bn in 2005.

Although growth rates have slowed since those peak years, Packaged Facts said it was far from overcrowded or saturated and predicted annual growth of 15-20% through 2015.

Seaweed may provide new source of functional ingredients

Seaweed and other macroalgae could rival milk products as sources of functional ingredients such as heart healthy bioactive peptides, according to a new study. 

The review of almost 100 scientific studies, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, reports that some seaweed proteins have the same effects as the bioactive peptides found in milk products and dairy products, and work to reduce blood pressure in a similar way to ACE inhibitor drugs.

“Due to the environment in which they grow, macroalgae produce unique and interesting biologically active compounds,” said Maria Hayes and colleagues from Teagasc Food Research Centre, Ireland and the University of London, UK.

“The variety of macroalga species and the environments in which they are found and their ease of cultivation make macroalgae a relatively untapped source of new bioactive compounds, and more efforts are needed to fully exploit their potential for use and delivery to consumers in food products,” they added.

Aurora Algae edges closer to omega-3 EPA commercialization

California’s Aurora Algae has signed off on the engineering contract for its commercial facility in Western Australia, as the company edges towards the production of thousands of tonnes of algae-based biomass annually.

The company announced this week that MWH and John Holland (JH) have been awarded the initial engineering contract, a move which is claimed to represent the start of the construction of the largest commercial scale photosynthetic algae facility in the world.

“Aurora Algae is now the first global company to begin a commercial project for bioproduct and biofuel production based on photosynthetic marine microalgae,” said Greg Bafalis, CEO of Aurora Algae.

Marine MUFAs may improve metabolic syndrome: Mouse study

Long-chain monounsaturated fatty acids from fish sources may improve insulin sensitivity and reduce risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome, according to new research in mice.

The study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, reports that blood plasma glucose, insulin, and lipid concentrations are enhanced, whilst insulin sensitivity is improved in mice fed a diet rich in marine derived long-chain monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs).

“This study demonstrates that fish-oil-derived MUFA ingestion reduces insulin resistance, as judged by the insulin tolerance test, and attenuates metabolic syndrome by improving hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperlipidemia,” wrote the study authors, led by Zhi-Hong Yang, from the Tokyo Innovation Center, Japan.

“Furthermore, intake of MUFA decreased obesity-induced inflammation by suppressing … inflammatory marker genes and arachidonic acid levels, thereby possibly, in turn, reducing insulin resistance in diet-induced obese mice,” they added.

Omega-3 in food & drink set to ‘boom’, says Packaged Facts

US retail sales of food and drink products making high omega-3 claims shot up 11 percent in 2010 to approach the $4bn mark and are predicted to be worth almost $7bn by 2015, according to new research.

Packaged Facts, which includes products enriched with plant-based omega-3 (alpha linolenic acid) in its analysis as well as the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, predicts 40 percent growth in the US omega-3 ingredient market between 2010 and 2015.

Although some market observers had expected sales of food and drink products containing added omega-3s to start leveling off, the market had in fact “continued to post significant growth”, noted Packaged Facts.

“Moreover, three factors indicate that another boom phase for omega-3-enhanced products is on the horizon:

1) An ongoing release of scientific studies supporting the health benefits of consuming omega-3

2) Innovative product introductions

3) Strong consumer awareness and demand.”

Fish Oil May Have Positive Effects on Mood, Alcohol Craving, New Study Shows

Research at the Indiana University School of Medicine disclosed at a molecular level a potential therapeutic benefit between these dietary supplements, alcohol abuse and psychiatric disorders.

In a multi-year study, researchers showed conclusive behavioral and molecular benefits for omega 3 fatty acid given to mice models of bipolar disorder. The fatty acid DHA, which is one of the main active ingredients in fish oil, “normalized their behavior,” according to Alexander B. Niculescu, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of psychiatry and the lead author of the study reported online in the Nature Publishing Group journal Translational Psychiatry.

Using a stress-sensitive mouse model of bipolar disorder developed in his lab, Dr. Niculescu and his colleagues studied the influence of dietary DHA. The mice have characteristic bipolar symptoms including being depressed and, when subjected to stress, becoming manic.

“The mice that were given DHA normalized their behavior, they are not depressed and when subjected to stress, they do not become manic,” said Dr. Niculescu. “When we looked into their brains, using comprehensive gene expression studies, we were surprised to see that genes that are known targets of psychiatric medications were modulated and normalized by DHA.”

An unexpected finding of the research was the discovery that the mice given DHA also showed a reduced desire for alcohol.
