Seafood Byproduct Seminar in Ireland mid June
The Irish Farmers Assoiciation (IFA) Aquaculture and the Irish Sea Fisheries Board, Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM)’s Aquaculture division will host a special seminar in the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone on June 16, starting at 11.00am.
The seminar will be open to all seafood processors and aquaculture operators and will look at the two main issues on by-products through specialist talks and discussions: 1. Regulationof by-products and 2. Options and opportunities for disposal / sale.
Options for the industry for alternatives to rendering of seafood by-products are gradually coming on stream, including incineration, composting, anaerobic digestion and transformation into technical products. All of these areas will be looked at in detail at the seminar.

Euromares 2010, held recently in Spain — results in advancement of marine and maritime policies of the EU
The latest advances and emerging ideas in the field of marine research, maritime innovation and the evaluation of the marine medium were at the forefront of the debates in the conference Euromares 2010, held from 18 to 19 May in Guijon, Spain.
Some 200 scientists, managers, politicians, authorities related to research and planning of the marine medium, NGO, the maritime industry and leaders of the maritime industry of all the Member States of the European Union (EU) participated in the event.

UNCW Center for Marine Science to Host Innovation Workshop for State’s Marine Research Community April 28, 2010
The University of North Carolina Wilmington Center for Marine Science is bringing together research scientists, university administrators, government leaders, members of innovation centers and business people from around the state for a collaborative workshop on permanent innovation from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 28 at the Center for Marine Science. The workshop will be facilitated by Langdon Morris, a recognized expert and author of the book, “Permanent Innovation.”
The workshop is NOT open to the general public, but media are welcome to attend and cover the event. About 135 participants are expected from across North Carolina.
The workshop’s purpose is to introduce the principles of permanent innovation to the center’s community of associated universities, government agencies and businesses, and to enable this community to improve its performance as a leading source of innovation and economic development for North Carolina. Accelerated innovation will be critical to support a general shift away in the state’s economy away from tobacco and manufacturing, and toward knowledge-related activities

UK’s marine science sector flourishing
The UK’s marine science sector is flourishing, thanks to a solid infrastructure of marine-focussed research centres, pioneering companies and renowned universities.
Scientists at OceanLab, at the University of Aberdeen, have collaborated on projects with the University of California Scripps Institute and research contracts with the Falkland Islands government and South Georgia government. The University of Hull’s Institute of Estuarine and Coastal Studies has worked with clients including Fortum O&M UK, the UK subsidiary of Finnish energy company, Fortum.
A new alliance of leading Scottish marine institutions was announced in November which will receive funding of £74.7million over the next seven years from the Scottish Further and Higher Education Funding Council. The Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS) will “provide Scotland with a globally-competitive platform from which to carry out world-class scientific research, training and knowledge exchange.”

Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and University of North Carolina Wilmington cooperate with funding from NOAA
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has announced a five-year, $22.5 million award of a new cooperative institute which will be headquartered at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) at Florida Atlantic University in Fort Pierce, Florida, and co-managed by the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). This is the single largest competitive research grant awarded to HBOI/FAU since their inception. The Cooperative Institute for Ocean Exploration, Research, and Technology is a consortium; limited partners are SRI International in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the University of Miami, Rosentiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science in Miami, Florida. The consortium will coordinate the work and resources of all of the member organizations for the purpose of advancing NOAA’s priorities.
The new institute will conduct research under three main themes: development of advanced underwater technologies, exploration and research of frontier regions of the eastern continental shelf and beyond, and improved understanding of deep and shallow coral ecosystems. NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research will be the institute’s primary NOAA partner, which will replace the four east coast centers of NOAA’s Undersea Research Program.
