NZ Biotech company Photonz successfully transfers omega-3 fermentation process to industrial scale Canadian pilot plant
Posted On: November 27, 2011Biotech company Photonz Corporation has achieved a major milestone on the path to commercially manufacturing, by fermentation, the high-value omega-3 fatty acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). It has successfully transferred its strain and fermentation process, developed in Auckland, to a contract facility in Canada, which has then used that process to ferment material from algal biomass in a 7.5 tonne industrial scale reactor. This demonstrates the feasibility of commercial production of EPA from marine microalgae.
The Canadian facility has a battery of reactors and support utilities that enable it to operate multi-tonne scale fermentations under industrial conditions. During the project it produced sufficient biomass for Photonz to complete development of the downstream purification processes for its EPA product, also at pilot industrial scale.

India: Make a fortune of fish waste, entrepreneurs told
Posted On: October 25, 2011Fishery waste contains many valuable ingredients such as chitin and chitosan and many useful by-products with applications in different fields can be made out of them and therefore entrepreneurs should set up more units, according to Dr. M.M Prasad, the scientist-in-charge of the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT), Vizag centre.
He was speaking at a one-day seminar on the issue held in the institute. He said technology was available to make full use of fisheries waste and manufacture these valuable by-products. He said it was estimated that about 8.5 million tonnes of fisheries was being generated in the country and shrimp processing was one of the largest sources of industrial fish waste, with more than one lakh tonnes. Business worth Rs. 3,00,000 crores could be generated out of the waste, but at present there were hardly 38 units or so in the country.

Speedy algal wound response revealed
Posted On: July 7, 2011Scientists have uncovered a biochemical pathway that enables a remarkable marine alga to rapidly heal itself after it has been wounded. The work could provide clues about how to make new synthetic adhesives that work under water.
Dasycladus vermicularis is a green alga found in warm tropical waters. Intriguingly, it is unicellular – the entire organism, which can be more than 2cm long, is a single cell. This makes it especially vulnerable to external damage, with the danger that much of its contents would leak out. Algenics and NovImmune announce research collaboration to express human antibodies using microalgae
Posted On: June 28, 2011Algenics announced a new research collaboration with NovImmune to biomanufacture monoclonal therapeutic antibodies using its proprietary expression platform AlgebiosysTM. Two fully human therapeutic antibodies have been retained from NovImmune’s current pipeline to be produced in the PTA microalgal cell line. There are numerous benefits to using microalgal expression systems over current technologies such as advantageous N-glycosylation profile, natural cell robustness and lack of animal-derived components, while retaining the use of conventional upstream and downstream processing equipments. This collaboration with NovImmune will validate this new and innovative system for the biomanufacturing of fully human therapeutic monoclonal antibodies.
